How Many Bird Species Are There

Introduction

Birds belong to the Aves family or the avian dinosaurs. They fall under the endothermic vertebrates. Birds are one of the most fantastic creations of nature. Hence, according to the scientists after studying the fossils, they accept that the birds are a part of a subgroup of the theropod dinosaurs. They are also more or less 150 million years ancient. There earliest fossil’s information came from the Tiaojishan Formation of China dated nearly to the late Jurassic period. Almost all birds are bipedal, warm-blooded vertebrates and astonishingly they are of more than 10,000 bird species.

Classification Of Birds

The classification of the bird means grouping the birds into different categories according to their physiological similarities. The terminology of this classification is taxonomy. Carl Linnaeus initiated taxology.

Birds are first put into the category of the kingdoms. They fall under the Animalia Kingdom. This kingdom is again divided into Phylum. Among this category the birds fall under the Phylum Chordata this means that they are animals with a backbone. After this comes, the stage calls Class. Here the birds are categorized under the Aves group. Now there is detailed bird information of their species.

Aves Bird

Nextly this Aves is divided into 23 orders. The Class of Aves is maximum in the order Passeriformes. The others are under Struthioniformes. In this, we find bird like ostrich and emus. Another division is Galliformes in which we see pheasants and guinea fowls.Hence, The next order is Piciformes. Birds like Barbets and woodpeckers are the members of this Piciformes order, and like this, it goes on.

Now let us see how these orders are divides into families. We can find 142 families under this Aves group. The family names end with “dae”. For example, the order Apodiformes is further classifies into the family of Apodidae that includes typical swifts, and another one is Hemiprocnidae in which we find crested swifts

Similarly, When we go further into bird information within the family now, we will get the genus. According to the data, there are almost 2057 types. The next division is the species. Likewise these species spilled into sub-species. Near about, there are almost 9702 types of species of birds. While, writing the name of a bird, this genus and the species becomes useful. The first part is the genus that starts with a capital, and the last part is the species that is in small letter.

Recent Research Of Bird Species

The new research by the American Museum Of Natural History says that there are more than 18,000 variations in the species of the bird. The magazine, Plos One says the fact. From the new research, researchers like Cracraft and Barrowclough along with their partners in the University of Lincoln and Washington vividly portrays a random sample of nearly 200 birds. Here, through the study of morphology, we can distinguish the bird’s evolution according to the color, plumage pattern, and more.

Overview About Birds and Bird Species

Classification of birds has many views.  Sometimes they are grouped under reptiles. There are some bird categorized under Birds of Prey in which we can find birds like owl, eagle, falcons, vultures, and many more. Likewise they have adapted feet and talons and can kill their prey to eat. Among them, Peregrine falcons can gear up their speed to 90kms/ hour. If we go deeper, we can find some exotic species of birds in countries like Australia and New Zealand. The giant bird in the world is the ostrich, and the smallest is the hummingbird. The Kiwi bird falls under the group of Birds Of the World. They have a different feature in their nostrils. And these are mainly nomadic and live on grains.
